Caravan for Publishers
The Caravan Project can help publishers:
- Expand the availability of your content to a wider audience
- Produce your content in formats your budget hasn’t allowed you to consider before
- Interact more efficiently with your distribution outlets
- Reduce the risk of unsold inventory and returns by more closely matching supply with demand
The Times They Are A-Changing
In the publishing world today, most small, non-fiction trade publishers and university presses have neither the staff nor the expertise to conduct more than business as usual: publish books the traditional way.
As the industry and markets rapidly change, you must pay careful attention to cost/benefit equations, anticipate demand, negotiate for shelf and advertising space and, given current practice, either swallow the expenses of overestimates or scramble to meet the clamor for an unexpected success before audience enthusiasm wanes.
The Value of Your Knowledge
Alongside these concerns, you find yourself in the unfortunate position of having to turn down meritorious manuscripts you would rather publish. Publishers of serious non-fiction have long cherished their collective mission to contribute substantively to the intellectual climate.
It is important to perpetuate and manage the dissemination of serious work. Who is better suited to this commitment than those with the expertise to cultivate talented authors and monitor the integrity of the product from start to finish?
An Industry’s Revolution
The book industry is in the midst of a full blown revolution. The world we live in is increasingly accepting of reading on electronic devices that range from desktop computers to cell phones. To stay current and remain profitable, publishers of serious non-fiction need ways to make their content available to those readers who want to purchase reading material that is not a printed and bound book.
It would be simple enough to pass the baton to the search engines, letting them simply sweep your databases with no care or discriminating thought regarding what they are serving to the public.
However, in the marketplace of emerging media, it is now possible for small trade and academic publishers to be the forerunners in the distribution of a variety of book formats that meet the needs of their plugged-in, media-savvy audience.
The Caravan Project Can Help
Caravan has provided the blueprint for creating, marketing and distributing alternative print and digital formats for serious non-fiction books. Caravan makes it possible to sell content in non-traditional formats, all of which represent additional income to participating publishers with minimal investment. The delivery systems developed by The Caravan Project for these formats help you:
- Eliminate the need for bookseller returns by allowing you to better match supply to demand
- Broaden your marketing reach by bypassing the need to negotiate for shelf space
- Make your publishing efforts available to a wider audience through a partnership of committed national and independent booksellers
Peter Osnos, an industry leader and successful publisher of serious non-fiction, has spearheaded this project and hired the necessary consultants to research and test our concept. Peter has worked closely with the Ingram Book Group, and many other acknowledged leaders in the industry — to develop the ability to distribute digital content at a sophisticated level.
Peter’s expertise and Ingram’s dedication to The Caravan Project not only give you a head start on the inside track, they offer a hallmark of integrity and commitment. We make our service, our intelligence and the opportunity for increased visibility available to you without expectation of remuneration.
The Specifics
Caravan has developed an economical method for producing excellent quality audio books. Some of the books have been read by the authors, most titles are produced using professional readers. The books have been recorded using facilities at various National Public Radio stations or University radio stationsand a small, dedicated group of very competent producers
All Caravan e-books are produced using the final edited files from the print editions. Caravan has engaged codeMantra to develop a reliable, cost-effective method for creating large-print books that are handsomely designed and contain accurate indices. Lightning Source Inc. will produce most of Caravan’s Large Print Books in a softcover format, using print-on-demand technology.
We have been continuously tracking sales from our group of vendors and at the conclusion of our demonstration phase, we will have significant data available to celebrate the success of these formats and distribution methods.
