Caravan Digital Formats

Our participating publishers have released Caravan books, all unabridged, in e-book, digital audio and large-print formats. Many of these are simple downloads.

e-book Formats

All e-book formats allow you to sell or purchase the entire book or chapters from the book. This ability to offer “granular” access to books will be of interest to students, travelers and others who want only part of a book or would like to preview the book before purchasing it in its entirety.

Audio Formats

Print Format — Large-Print Paperback (shipping required)

If your purchase includes a downloadable audio book or e-book, you will receive an email that will include a web address with authorization code to download the item at your leisure to the device of your choice. The email will include instructions for how to complete your download.

For tangible items that require shipping, the bookseller enters your contact information. Your item is then produced and shipped to you.

What the Formats Are and What You Get

To help you choose the digital format that best suits your reading needs, we provide these descriptions of the digital formats we offer, as well as information on their appropriate platforms.

Adobe PDF Format – Download

The ubiquitous format for internet documents, PDF stands for Portable Document Format, an Adobe proprietary format for viewing two-dimensional documents in a fixed layout.

Caravan PDF files are encrypted using the proprietary DRM file format. To read these files, you will need to use a device that allows you to install the Adobe Reader 7 and Adobe Digital Editions software. Other common PDF readers will not be able to access these files

PDF files include clickable links that take you to specific places in the document, such as contents, subheads, notes, index entries and more.

Microsoft Reader Format – Download

Microsoft Reader is a Microsoft program for reading digital e-books on any device that runs Windows.

Audio Download – Download

Caravan’s audio download files are available as MP3 files and can be downloaded to personal computers and various other hand held devices as well as burned to a CD or DVD.

When you go to download your book, you will need to set up a customer account with our audio book provider in order to enable your audio book download. You will be asked to enter your email address and create a password. We respect your privacy and will not use your personal information for any purpose other than enabling your download. The process then determines if you have the necessary software on your system. If you need to install the software, the process directs you to the software download. When the software is on your system, your book download continues.

Audio SD Chip Format – Shipping Required

Secure Digital (SD) is a flash memory card format used in computers and portable devices that include digital cameras and handheld computers. SD cards are small — 1" x 1 ¼" — and can be used to store computer files, similar to older floppy disks and the newer flash drives.

Many handheld PDAs have a built-in SD card slot, and many computers come with SD card readers built in. You can also purchase portable SD card readers using USB technology to use with desktops and laptops that have USB slots.

The audio files on an SD chip are encoded using the proprietary DRM file format. The chips will come with the necessary software to play on Windows, Mac, and smartphones running Palm or Windows software. The software also provides the ability to transfer the audio to Windows-Media-capable devices and iPods.

Large-Print Book Format – Shipping Required

Lightning Source Inc., part of Nashville-based Ingram Industries Inc., is working with The Caravan Project to produce paperback copies of Caravan books using print-on-demand technology. All titles are available via Lightening Source, Inc. with the exception of Island Press - for this publisher’s Large Print versions, please contact directly. These editions are designed for those who prefer to read larger type.

Caravan large-print books are perfect-bound on acid-free paper. They have been produced in accordance with the standards developed by the National Association for the Visually Handicapped (NAVH) and bear their seal of approval. Covers are of quality coated stock, similar to trade paperbacks available at a bookshop, and bear the design of the original jacket/cover.
