Publishers Lunch
MacArthur Backs Distribution Project

April 3, 2006

Peter Osnos has secured a $250,000 MacArthur Foundation grant to support the “demonstration phase” of his venture to improve the availability and efficiency of distribution for serious books. Now known as the Caravan Project and based at the University of North Carolina Press, it includes Beacon Press, the New Press, the University of California Press, Yale University Press, and the Council on Foreign Relations Press. By spring 2007, Caravan expects to make available about two dozen titles from the participating publishers in a standardized “menu” of simultaneous formats—hardcover, paperback, digital audio, and e-book (sold both as an entire books and by chapter), and possibly POD large print.

Lightning Source and Ingram are service partners, and pilot retail locations will include both independent bookstores and “a selection” of Borders outlets. UNC Press director Kate Douglas Torrey is chair of the board of publishers, and industry veterans Carie Freimuth and Della Mancuso are consultants.
